Arranging the funeral, without being sold to

In the first days, arranging a funeral is a decision made by exhausted people with no time to compare, which is the worst possible position to spend money from — and funerals are one of the larger costs a family meets, often several thousand dollars or more. This step is not about which funeral director to choose; it is about knowing enough not to be rushed.

A few things are worth holding onto. You are allowed to ask more than one funeral director for an itemised quote, and you are allowed to take a little time to do it — there is more room here than the pressure of the moment suggests. The cost splits into the funeral director's own fees and the third-party costs they pay on your behalf (things like the cemetery or crematorium, and the death certificate); an itemised quote lets you see both, and see what is genuinely required versus what is an upgrade. A simpler, lower-cost funeral is a legitimate choice, not a lesser one, and a good funeral director will respect it.

On paying for it: if the estate has funds, funeral costs are ordinarily paid from the estate, and a bank will often release money from the deceased person's account specifically to pay a funeral invoice even before probate, when shown the invoice. If the person was a veteran, check the DVA funeral benefit first. If the family genuinely cannot meet the cost and the estate cannot either, there are hardship and bereavement supports worth asking a funeral director or a financial counsellor about rather than going into debt.
